Christmas Time: A Chance To Make Some Extra Dough!

Seasonal jobs are a great way of making extra money on the side, especially during Christmas time. Companies hire extra hands during this festive rush and the pay is also quite good. A point to keep in mind though is that holiday jobs that pay well may not always have the best working environments and you may find yourself at the mercy of woeful work timings.

With the harbour being a popular Christmas party venue in Sydney, there are plenty of openings during this time. I think I got the better end of the stick with my holiday job, as a waiter for a Christmas party cruise company in Sydney. Though I did keep my fingers crossed in the hope that I’d have an interesting experience interacting with guests on these Xmas dinner cruises. PS: If you need any tips for Christmas party ideas, I have got many in my kitty, as I may have seen them all over the month!

There are jobs available in other sectors as well, though the hospitality sector works on overload during the Christmas season with multiple parties thrown every day for the whole month! People working in this sector like chefs, waiters, bartenders, managers and other critical service personnel are always on their toes. Taking up these ad-hoc seasonal job opportunities is a great way to make some money on the side. The jobs in the hospitality sector may seem easy in comparison to the other suggestions I have for you!

Christmas time is a great reason for people to go on a major shopping spree and the retail sector bears the brunt of all this rush. People working in this sector have a lot to deal with, from grumpy indecisive customers to endless reruns of Christmas carols for a month or more, which is enough for most to go nuts! Not to mention standing throughout the day, and the mess you have to contend with at the end with endless clothes to fold and put back. The pay is good though, and you get extra if you do overtime as well. There are plenty of openings for salespersons, cashiers, gift wrappers etc. so choose what entices you the most.

Online shopping is gaining momentum and it reaches its peak during the Christmas season as people turn to different e-commerce sites for great deals. The sudden rush can trigger technical issues and even the smallest thing that goes wrong can result in a loss in revenue. Companies hire extra pairs of eyes to spot issues and take action instantly. So if you know your way around computers and coding, you can get a resume-worthy job with decent pay here.

Lastly comes the logistics and delivery departments. With the rising popularity of online shopping and people sending gifts for Christmas, courier companies require a lot of extra staff during the festive season. From logistics to end delivery, there are lot of options to choose from. You will most likely be working in shifts which are flexible to an extent.

Whichever job you end up with, don’t forget to greet each customer with a smile. Even if you are torn up on the inside, don’t let it show on the outside, as a smile goes a long way. The more cheerful you are, the more it will reflect in your service and on the people around you. Isn’t Christmas all about spreading cheer… so do your bit wherever you are!

End the year on a high with office Christmas parties

With Christmas round the corner and the holiday spirit seeping into everyone, it’s the perfect time to organize an office party that celebrates the year gone by. An office party is an important event for employers to show their appreciation to their staff and encourage bonding between colleagues in a more relaxed setting.
Offices are known to have ups and downs, pay hikes and salary cuts, back-stabbers and buck-passers, but Christmas is always a great leveller. It’s the perfect time to put all grievances aside and have some good ol’ fashioned festive fun!
But is it really fun for the person planning the party? If you’ve been saddled with the responsibility of organizing a Christmas shindig for your colleagues, you’ll soon wonder if you’ve bitten off more than you can chew.
Since it’s so much more than just putting up a tree and organizing some food and music, you could be a little democratic and ask for ideas and opinions. But coming to a consensus will be next to impossible! Your best option would be to do the research and just go with your gut. Sydney has a lot of interesting and affordable venues… just make sure your party has all the right ingredients to make it a success!
So, what does it take to avoid being booed and pull off a great Christmas party that will be talked about in the coming year? It ain’t no rocket science, that’s for sure; but you’ll still find yourself fretting over the details like it’s a ‘do or die event’ that requires all your attention!
Here’s what you should focus your attention on: A great venue, great entertainment, great food and drinks and great music! So, first things first… If you’re in Sydney, there’s no venue that could top Sydney Harbour… And, if you’re thinking about the harbour, what’s the first thing that jumps right at you… a Sydney Harbour Christmas party cruise!
There are numerous party cruises to choose from, but ideally you should go for one that offers an all-inclusive package, including an event management team that will help you execute every last detail. This could really take the weight off your shoulders.
Depending on your budget and the number of people attending, you could choose to either charter a cruise or just a private deck. Your menu, beverage, theme and entertainment inclusions can also be tailored to meet your budget constraints. If you can’t afford a DJ, you could bring a rocking playlist of your own, round up a group of office carolers and organize some fun party games that are guaranteed to get the crowd going.
Besides, what’s an office party without Secret Santa? The run up to the Secret Santa revelation can begin weeks in advance when everyone’s picked a co-worker’s name out of a hat. With hints, clues and secret notes being passed, the whole office will be looking forward to that party day when all will be revealed. But, make sure there’s a spending limit as people can go overboard with their gifts!
But if Secret Santa’s been played often, you can shake things up a little with ‘White Elephant’. Here too, everyone in the office is given a spending limit and asked to buy a gift and wrap it up. At your Christmas party, all these gifts of varying shapes, sizes and colours will be placed under a Christmas tree. Then everyone picks a number out of a hat. And starting from one, in ascending order, people can choose a gift from under the tree and unwrap it.
But here’s the twist… If someone doesn’t want to unwrap one or if they don’t like what they’ve unwrapped, they can steal a gift from someone else. But, each gift can be stolen only three times before it is frozen with the person holding it. This is one game that can really churn out a lot of laughs and fun!
So, get that office Christmas party going and end the year on a high!
